Entrepreneur Halla Tómasdóttir will be the next president of Iceland
Halla Tomasdottir he won presidential elections in Icelandimposing itself in a crowded field in which the others two main challengers were also women. There 55 year old businesswoman obtained 34.3%against the 25.2% of former Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir and 15.5% of Halla Hrund Logadottir.
According to preliminary data, the participation was 64.8%the highest in a presidential election since 1996. When the first results were announced, still at dawn, theenvironmentalist Jakobsdottir, who resigned as prime minister in April to run for president, conceded defeat and wished Tomasdottir good luck. In Iceland the role of the president is eminently ceremonial, although he has the power to veto laws and call a referendum in certain situations.
During the campaign, Tomasdottir expressed his intention for Iceland to become a “model of sustainable and ecological solutions” and advocated “equality for all and a social contract based on justice, peace and inclusion.”
Tomasdottir leads the global collective of entrepreneurs The B Team, with the declared goal of creating new forms of business leadership and changing business practices for a better society. The 56-year-old businesswoman will become Iceland’s second female president after Vigdis Finnbogadottirin office from 1980 to 1996.
A total of 12 candidates stood in these elections, including Hrund Logadottir, president of the National Energy Agency, comedian and former mayor of Reykjavi’k Jon Gnarr and political scientist Baldur Thorhallsson.
The new president will succeed next August 1st at Gudni Th Johannesson who did not run for re-election after two terms.
