The Ducati choice
Last Thursday La Gazzetta dello Sport he had said that the Ducati was convinced to welcome the current championship leader into the official team – alongside the reconfirmed ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia – Jorge Martin. The Spaniard showed up at Mugello very satisfied, so much so that he declared that “everything was going in the right direction”talking about “The first contact went well” Between the parts.
Something, however, seemed to ruin Ducati’s plans, convinced in recent days that they could move Marc Marquez to the Pramac team, with officer treatment. And this something was the net “it’s not an option” of the Spanish champion regarding the possibility of a transfer to Paolo Campinoti’s team.
The Ducati sporting director, Mauro Grassilli, had confessed that he had listened to Marquez’s position with surprise, suggesting that he did not expect such a categorical refusal. CEO Claudio Domenicali had not completely closed off the possibility of having even five GP25s on the starting grid next year.
The post Mugello
Already at the end of the Italian Grand Prix, however, we could sense a diametrically opposite – and rather singular – state of mind between the two rivals for the seat in the Lenovo team. Marquez smiling he explained “to have very clear ideas and to be calm about the future“, While Martin darkened he emphasized that he had “I experienced a very difficult weekend off the track“, hoping to arrive at Assen already with a signed contract in hand.
On Monday afternoon, my colleague German Garcia Casanova from the pages of Autosportrevealed that Ducati found itself faced with an identical ultimatum from Martin and Marquez – either the official team or farewell – and was called upon to essentially choose who to let go elsewhere between the two pilots.
And Ducati would have thus decided to pair Marc Marquez with ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia.
Martin – who would have obtained first a handshake from the top management of Borgo Panigale for his arrival in the official team and then a further request for time -, he would have thus broken the deadlock by communicating his decision to leave Ducatifaced with so much indecision towards him after the recent results obtained.
According to the reconstruction of Autosport, Jorge Martin will thus find himself choosing between KTM, Aprilia, Honda and Yamahawith this last option which would make sense in view of a transfer – very probable – of Pramac to the Japanese.
In short, in order to keep Marc Marquez, Ducati would be risking losing Martin, Pramac and also Bastianini – he too is increasingly determined to settle elsewhere, with Aprilia, KTM and Yamaha who would do anything to have him with them.
