On Saturday, Damien Dumozoa, the chair umpire at the French Open tennis tournament, received encouragement from the crowd when he came to the rescue of an injured pigeon during a match.
The incident, which was well received by the audience, took place during the match between Daniil Medvedev and Tomas Makhak in the third round of the tournament, which ended with Medvedev winning.
While the two players were switching places during the fourth set of the match, the bird landed on the sand floor in front of Medvedev’s bench and flapped its wings, but it seemed that it was not able to fly.
“I hope the bird is okay. It didn’t look like it. I think something is wrong with its wing,” Medvedev said. He added, “I thought to myself: ‘Oh my God. If we get an extra minute to catch our breath, that would be perfect.’ And that’s what happened.”
Medvedev added, “The referee did a good job. He was affectionate. I hope the bird is fine.”
The referee got off his chair to put the bird in a towel.
The pigeon tried to escape from the referee’s grasp, but he managed to catch the bird and hand it over to one of the tournament organizers, amid warm applause from the audience.
