Third heat wave hits Mexico: Temperatures of up to 45°C and risk of tornadoes

He National Meteorological Service (SMN) of Mexico has issued a warning of extreme weather conditions for this Friday, May 31, 2024, anticipating a third heat wave that will affect much of the country, with temperatures that could exceed 45 ° C in multiple states.

Furthermore, the possible formation of whirlwinds or tornadoes in the states of Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas due to the interaction of several atmospheric factors, including a dry line and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico.

Weather Forecast Highlights:

• Heat wave: Sinaloa, Zacatecas, Michoacán, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Morelos, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz, Tabasco and Campeche will experience maximum temperatures above 45 °C.
• Potential for whirlwinds and tornadoes: The regions of Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas face a high risk of tornadic phenomena, with winds that could reach between 60 and 80 km/h.
• Rains and showers: Intervals of showers with occasional heavy rains are expected in Oaxaca and Chiapas, and showers are expected in several states in the north, west, center and south of the country, including important urban areas such as Mexico City.
• Precautions: Heavy rains could cause landslides, flooding and increased flows in rivers and streams. Wind gusts also have the potential to topple trees and structures.
