Although almost 4 years have passed since the launch of the PS5, PS4 still represents half of total PlayStation players and consequently represents an area of great importance for Sony Interactive Entertainment.
At least this is what emerged from the recent briefing dedicated to the company’s gaming division presented by the two new CEOs of SIE, Hermen Hulst and Hideaki Nishino. The latter, indicated that to date PS4 has 49 million monthly active users despite being on the market for over 10 years. Practically as many as those on PS5, which however is continuing to grow and expand its installed base.
Nishino’s words
“The PS5 user base continued to grow significantly, reaching half of our monthly active consoles,” Nishino said. “While PS4 is still an important part of our business, PlayStation 5 players are even more engaged than the previous generation and we expect this trend to continue.
As we can see in the graph above, although the number of active users is the same, engagement on PS5 is significantly greaterwith an average of 2.4 billion overall games per month, compared to 1.4 billion on PS4.
During the briefing, among other things, it emerged that PS5 is the console from which Sony has drawn the most revenue ever, thanks to the fact that the average spending per user is the highest ever. Furthermore, the company has more clearly explained its multiplatform strategy, with single-player titles not arriving on PC until months and years later, to convert players to PlayStation via sequels.
