Climate: Heat wave hits Mexico with dangerous temperatures, CONAGUA warns of tornadoes

Persistence of a third wave of heat In much of the country, this phenomenon is generating extremely high temperatures, exceeding 45 °C in various regions of Mexico. The National Water Commission (CONAGUA) has issued a weather forecast for today, Wednesday, May 29, 2024, warning about the possibility of formation of whirlwinds or tornadoes in the northeast of the country.

The heat wave mainly affects Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Morelos, Veracruz, Tabasco and Campeche, where temperatures higher than the 45°C.

They wait temperatures from 40 to 45 °C in Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Colima, and northern areas of Querétaro and Hidalgo. In regions such as Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato and the southwest of the State of Mexico, temperatures will range between 35 and 40 °C.

Risk of whirlwinds and tornadoes in northeastern Mexico

In addition to the heat, the interaction of a dry line over Coahuila with a stationary front on the northeast border could trigger heavy rains and possible whirlwinds or tornadoes in Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas.

The population must remain constantly alert, since intense rains can cause flooding, landslides and flooding, increasing the level of rivers and streams.

Rain and storms in other regions

The forecast of climate also indicates rains strong punctuals in Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, State of Mexico, Mexico City and Morelos, as well as showers in San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Durango, Aguascalientes, Oaxaca and Chiapas.

These precipitations will be accompanied by electric shocks and hail, as well as winds with gusts of up to 70 km/h in some areas.

CONAGUA urges the population to take preventive measures in the face of extreme heat, since high temperatures can cause health problems. Likewise, caution is recommended in areas with forecast heavy rain and strong gusts of wind, which could cause trees and advertising to fall.
