Barcelona have paid Xavi €2.5 million following the termination of his coaching contract, reports reveal.
Just a month after reversing his decision to resign this summer, Xavi was relieved of his duties after public comments about the club’s transfers frustrated president Joan Laporta, who wasted no time in sacking the former midfielder.
Xavi had one year left on his contract with Barcelona and was entitled to around 11 million euros in compensation for his dismissal, but SPORT has confirmed that the 44-year-old happily agreed to waive his right to remuneration.
Instead, Xavi requested that Barcelona refund him the €2.5 million he paid to terminate his contract with Al Sadd ahead of his move to Camp Nou in November 2021, and the club agreed.
Xavi also demanded that his backroom staff be fully compensated for the termination of their contracts and a full agreement has now been reached.
Barcelona are pressing ahead with plans to hire former German coach Hansi Flick to replace Xavi, agreeing terms on a two-year contract with the 59-year-old.
Flick arrived in Barcelona on Tuesday along with his agent, Pini Zahavi, and reports suggest he could be unveiled as the club’s new manager on Wednesday.
His contract is believed to be worth less than half of the deal signed by Xavi. Flick will take home an annual salary of €3 million, with a €1 million bonus for winning the Champions League and a €750,000 bonus for winning the La Liga title.
An immediate press conference is not expected to present Flick, who instead will take several weeks to familiarize himself with everything that is happening at the Camp Nou before appearing before the media.
