It is a chronic and progressive inflammatory disease, with subtle symptoms that can be confused with those of other pathologies. It is eosinophilic esophagitis, “a pathology caused by a short circuit of the immune system which causes inflammation of the esophagus making swallowing difficult, if not sometimes impossible. There are, however, warning signs that parents can keep in mind. keep an eye out to understand if the child may be affected.” On 29 May the Bambino Gesù pediatric hospital in Rome is dedicating an Open day to this disease which is not yet fully known outside of specialized centres, a day of free visits and information for families with expert allergists and gastroenterologists. All the details to participate on www.editorebambinogesu.it.
Eosinophilic esophagitis “is a chronic disease which is still often diagnosed late and affects approximately 35 children per 100,000 people, but recent epidemiological studies indicate a significant increase in cases in the child population. It is a chronic inflammatory disease – recalls the hospital – localized in the esophagus and is caused by a reaction of the immune system that triggers an immuno-allergic inflammation: the inflamed esophagus can stiffen and narrow over time, if not promptly treated with the specific therapies currently available”.
Still not fully known outside specialized centers, this disease sometimes manifests itself with subtle symptoms that can be confused with those of other pathologies. There are, however, some signs that may be a sign of eosinophilic esophagitis: the child takes a long time to complete the meal, chews for a long time, drinks a lot while eating, prefers soft meals or meals in very small pieces. An early and certain diagnosis through endoscopy of the esophagus is essential to keep the evolution of the disease under control, preventing it from progressing and worsening.
On Wednesday 29 May, from 8.30am to 5pm, the experts from the Bambino Gesù Gastroenterology and Allergology Units will be available to children and young people with symptoms and behaviors attributable to this disease. In addition to the specialist doctors, the Association of Families with Eosinophilic Esophagitis (Eseo) will be present and will provide information material on the pathology and on the activity carried out by the association itself.
To participate in the Open day, which will take place at the San Paolo headquarters (viale di San Paolo 15, Rome), it is necessary to undergo a small screening test by reading a short questionnaire available at this link. If by reading the questions you realize that your child has more than one behavior or symptom among those indicated, you can book a visit for the open day. You can book by calling Cup (06 68181) and requesting a joint Gastroenterological – Allergological evaluation for the Eosinophilic Esophagitis Open Day or by sending an email to [email protected].
