Climate | Dangerous heat for this Sunday, CONAGUA warns of more than 45 °C in 17 states of Mexico

In today’s weather forecast, May 26, 2024, the National Water Commission (WITH WATER) warns of the continuation of the third wave of heat of the season in Mexico. The anticyclonic circulation at medium levels of the atmosphere is responsible for the high temperatures that will be recorded in various regions of the country.

They wait temperatures above 45 °C in the states of Sonora, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Morelos, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche and Yucatán.

Given the high temperatures, the authorities emphasize that the third heat wave could represent a significant risk to public health, so it is recommended to take precautions to avoid heat stroke and dehydration.

In addition to the extreme heat, a dry line over Coahuila, in combination with the subtropical jet stream and a low pressure trough over the northeast of the country, is generating strong gusts of wind in the northwest and north of Mexico. These conditions, along with humidity from the Gulf of Mexico, could cause heavy rains and the possible formation of whirlwinds or tornadoes in areas of San Luis Potosí.

Rain forecast

Intervals of showers are forecast with lstrong occasional rains (25 to 50 mm) in Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, State of Mexico, Morelos, Tlaxcala, Puebla and Chiapas. In addition, intervals of showers (5 to 25 mm) are expected in Michoacán, Guerrero, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Mexico City and Oaxaca, and isolated rains (0.1 to 5 mm) in Durango, Zacatecas, Coahuila and Veracruz.

Strong gusts of wind could cause trees and advertising to fall, while heavy rain can reduce visibility, cause landslides, ponding or flooding, and raise river and stream levels.

Predicted maximum temperatures

For today, they are expected maximum temperatures between 40 and 45°C in Durango, Zacatecas, Colima, Guanajuato, Querétaro (north), Puebla (north and southwest) and Quintana Roo, and between 35 and 40°C in Baja California, Baja California Sur, Aguascalientes and the State of Mexico (southwest).

In Tlaxcala and Mexico City, they are expected maximum temperatures of 30 to 35°C.
