“We can address it with diet, with cognitive behavioral treatments, with increased physical activity, with drugs and with surgery. The actors who hold individual weapons in the battle against obesity must sit around a table, as happens every day in hospitals, and choose the best strategy for the individual patient and for the individual moment of her life ”. Thus the president of the Italian Society of Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Diseases Giuseppe Navarraon the occasion of the 32nd National Sicob Congress entitled ‘Obesity: in search of a new therapeutic alliance’, underway at Giardini Naxos (Messina).
“There is a decline in the vocation for surgery: fewer and fewer young people want to be surgeons and we would not like – added Navarra – that in the future they would have to come from outside. Therefore it is important to stimulate the curiosity and enthusiasm of young people towards surgery. We, like other companies, have paid great attention and committed a considerable use of resources to stimulate their enthusiasm and curiosity and in recent years we have been rewarded”.
With respect to the value of a consolidated partnership such as the one with J&J MedTech, Navarra underlined that there is a tendency “for ever greater quality and safety for treatments and therefore the training element is fundamental. This partnership was created around a common good which is the training of the surgeon who follows and acts on obesity. A cycle of activities has been created for 3 years which last year was awarded as one of the best projects in this area and we are very satisfied and hopeful that this collaboration will continue long into the future” he concludes.
