IMSS reimburses cancer patient 200 thousand pesos for not providing medical care

The attention on Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) can be a real odyssey, even for people who, for years, dedicated themselves to working for the same organization.

This was the story of Sara Montenegro, an IMSS retiree who preferred to receive private medical careafter she was diagnosed with breast cancer and did not receive timely care at the Institute.

Now, after four months of waiting and starting a procedure, Sara Montenegro received 200 thousand pesos from the IMSSwhich allowed him to resolve the debts he would have acquired to pay for his medical treatment privately.

Sara Montenegro, 61, found herself in a desperate situation in 2020 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Given the impossibility of receiving treatment at the IMSS due to the pandemic, Montenegro had to resort to a private hospitalfacing a subsequent relapse and pawning his house for 500 thousand pesos to cover medical expenses.

The woman received treatment in a private hospital, where surgery and four sessions of chemotherapy were performed, an expense that was covered by private insurance. “I was thinking of starting my treatment, but the insurance told me there was no radiation… They don’t give you options, I decided to look in the private sector,” she says.

Sara denounced that the linear accelerator at the IMSS clinic in Baja California did not work, even though the symbolic inauguration of the device took place recently. However, they reported that the device would serve until December 2023, but there was already a waiting list.

The total cost of the treatment ranges from 260 thousand pesos and he spends 2 thousand 250 pesos per week to travel to Tijuana, that is, 9 thousand pesos per month. Sara covered her expenses privately. Now, thanks to her repayment, she will be able to solve her debts.
