Atari acquires its former competitor from the 70s and 80s. The brand founded by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney puts an end to what was the first console war in history. It’s like if one day Nintendo buys Sega or Microsoft buys Nintendo or Sony, something like that just happened.
Thanks to this new purchase, Atari will have more than 200 games at its disposal. Let’s remember that Atari is specializing in retro gamesre-releasing miniature versions of their consoles, supporting the re-release of games on modern consoles, acquiring retro game developers like Digital Eclipse, and now buying their old competition.
Atari will seek to expand digital and physical distribution of older Intellivision games, create new games, and explore branding and licensing opportunities.
On the other hand, the new owner affirms that Intellivision will change its name, will have licensing rights and would continue working on the development of the Amico console project, whose launch was expected for 2020 and among those involved was Tommy Tallarico, musician and music composer from video game.
Phil Adam, CEO of Intellivision, says they are looking forward to expanding their collaboration and bringing a wide range of new titles to the Amico platform.
What was Intellivision?
Considered the main rival of the Atari 2600 to rank as the second home console at the time. The console was developed by Mattel Electronics and introduced in 1979. It sold about 5 million units and its most successful game was Las Vegas Poker & Blackjack.
