In his latest “Email Threat Landscape Report”, TrendMicro said it blocked as many as 45,261,542 high-risk emails during 2023, a figure that reflects the continued prevalence of email as a crucial but vulnerable communications tool. Despite his almost fifty years of age, Email remains the most used means of communication in the world, making it a privileged target for cyber attacks. Also over the course of last year, Trend Micro intercepted and neutralized 19.1 million malware files, an increase of 349% compared to 2022. The exponential increase is substantially attributed toincreased use of phishing links inserted into email attachments, a tactic that demonstrates how cybercriminals are refining their strategies to penetrate corporate defenses. However, the cyber attack is not limited to malware: ransomware attacks also saw a 9% increase.
Phishing specifically geared towards credential theft reached 4.7 million, an increase of 5% compared to last year. Trend Micro highlighted a 263% increase in detections related to Computer Vision, a technology it uses image analysis and machine learning to identify elements such as company logos, login forms and other sensitive content, for the purpose of discovering malicious URLs used in phishing attempts.
During 2023, however, a significant increase in Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks was also recorded, with growth of 16%. In particular, BEC’s detections using Writing Style DNA technology, which analyzes the real user’s writing style to identify discrepancies in suspicious emails, increased by 23%. Detections via anti-spam engines also showed a 13% increase. To counter these threats, Trend Micro has implemented Trend Vision One — Email and Collaboration Protection, a cutting-edge solution for protecting email communications. This integrates advanced AI capabilities to block zero-day attacks, BEC and advanced phishing techniques, covering email services such as Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.
