Yesterday Sunday May 19the day the “Pink Tide” rally and the Third Presidential Debate took place, was the most violent day so far this year in Mexicowith 104 intentional homicides.
According to the daily homicide report of the Security Cabinet, the states with the most cases were State of Mexico and Guanajuato, with 15 homicides each. They were followed by the States of Jaliscowith 14; Michoacanwith 10; New Lion, with 7; and Baja Californiawith 6 murders.
With 104 intentional homicides, Sunday surpassed April 28, the day the Second Presidential Debate took place, as the most violent day so far this year, since that day – also Sunday – 103 cases were recorded. With this, May is emerging as the most violent month of 2024.
The Daily Security Report indicates that April closed with 78.3 daily murders (2,349 in total), being the bloodiest month of the year so far. However, May accumulates a higher average, of 79.6 daily homicides during its first 19 days.
Only in this Last weekend, Mexico accumulated 280 homicides: 97 on Friday; 79 on Saturday; and 104 on Sunday.
Precisely one of the topics that the candidates Claudia Sheinbaum, from the Let’s Keep Making History coalition, Xóchitl Gálvez, from Fuerza y Corazón, and the candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez, from Movimiento Ciudadano, who addressed during the third and last presidential debate, was the issue of security.
It should be noted that on May 6, the President Andrés Manuel López Obrador accepted that in his Government there are more murders than in past six-year terms, but he assured that this does not mean that there is more violence.
“There is no more violence, there are more homicides than in the entire (past) six-year term, because there are fewer robberies than in previous six-year terms, there are fewer kidnappings than in previous six-year terms and fewer federal crimes,” he said when asked about the 170 thousand homicides in Mexico during his Administration that is about to conclude.
Regarding this, the president said that what has been most difficult to reduce are murders due to the persistence of criminal groups, in reference to drug trafficking cartels.
