andAmerican Xander Schauffele paid a historic debt and finally managed to win his first Major, the PGA Championship, this Sunday, at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville (Kentucky).
Schauffele had Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020 as his greatest achievement and for some time he had been threatening to achieve his first victory in a grand slam tournament: he was second in the 2018 British Open and in the 2019 Masters and third in the US Open in 2019 and the 2021 Masters, in addition to eight other Top 10s.
The victory of the American, 30 years old and a professional since 2015, was big: he won with the lowest score in the history of the Majors, with 263 strokes, 21 under par, and with a birdie on the last hole to take the applause from the public and getting rid of the pressure that his compatriot Bryson DeChambeau had put on him, minutes before, who was one stroke behind.
“I hadn’t won in a long time,” Schauffele recalled. “I told myself that I had to focus on what I was doing, that it was my opportunity and I had to take advantage of it,” she added.
The Norwegian Viktor Hovland completed the podium by finishing in third position, with 266 hits (-18).
Scottie Scheffler’s recovery
The Masters champion closed a very complicated week: he was arrested on Friday morning, when he was detained while trying to jump a police checkpoint and was transported to jail before being released and returning to the golf course.
The best Latin player was the Chilean Joaquín Niemann with a cumulative score of seven under par after -4 signed this Sunday. The Argentine Alejandro Tosti made the pair after -3 in the final round, with an eagle in the final round, which was very celebrated. It should be remembered that Colombian Camilo Villegas was left out of the cut on Friday.
