The Argentine driver Kevin Benavides is currently hospitalized with a guarded prognosis, as confirmed by his own entourage, after being the victim of an accident last Saturday while preparing for the Desafío Ruta 40, fourth round of the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC ), scheduled from 1 to 7 June 2024.
According to the Latin American media “Infobae”, the two-time winner of the Dakar in the motorcycle category was training in a motocross circuit, the “Mantillo Mx Park” (located in the province of Salta), where he suffered an accident. He was immediately admitted to a local medical center, before being transferred to another hospital in Salta.
Benavides’ entourage released the following statement: “Dakar double, Kevin Benavides, suffered an accident during his training session and is currently in restricted condition. At this time, we ask all media and the general public to remain cautious and respectful of the information released, as this is a sensitive situation.”
“We deeply appreciate the support and concern of all supporters, fans and colleagues. We would like to assure you that as soon as we have an official medical report or any relevant information to communicate, you will be informed promptly through official channels. We strongly ask the media and the general public to respect the privacy of Kevin Benavides and his family during this difficult time,” they commented.
KTM Team Manager Andreas Hölzl, meanwhile, expressed some words about the incident, as reported by the Argentine media “Carburando”: “Obviously this is a big setback for Kevin, made even more serious by the fact that he arrives shortly before his home race in Argentina. Training for the upcoming Desafío Ruta 40 had gone very well, with the whole team working hard in preparation for the event.”
“Fortunately, the injuries are not too serious and, although he is still being followed closely, he is improving day by day. It’s unclear how long Kevin will be out of action, but everyone at Red Bull KTM supports him and wants to see him return to the team soon,” he concluded.
We will therefore have to keep an eye on the development of the Dakar winner in the motorcycle category for the 2021 and 2023 editions. Motorsport.com meanwhile wishes him a speedy recovery.
