USA.- The masterpiece defining of Leonora Carrington“Dagobert’s Distractions“, made history in the Sotheby’s New York sales roomThe renowned auction house Sotheby’s reported on social media this Wednesday.
“During the modern night auction, six bidders got a astonishing price of 28.5 million dollarsnine times its previous auction record,” they write in a post on the social network Instagram.
“At public auction for the first time in three decades, the work reveals a realm of infinite possibilities. The divine and the terrestrial, flora and fauna intertwine in a captivating dance,” the publication explains.
“Tonight’s sale makes Carrington the fourth best-selling surrealist artist of all time and the fifth best-selling female artist of any era,” notes Sotheby’s.
Translated into Mexican pesos, the painting was sold (to the auction winner) for more than 476.5 millions of pesos.
The buyer
The Vogue media outlet publishes that “Les Distractions de Dagobert” (painted in 1945), is an emblematic work in the career of Leonora Carrington, born in 1917 in the United Kingdom, and died in 2011 in Mexico City.
He adds that this work was acquired by Eduardo F. Costantini, founder of Malba, Museum of Latin American Art in Buenos Aires.
After the hard-fought purchase, Costantini said that “it is an iconic painting, one of the most admired works in the history of surrealism and an unparalleled masterpiece of Latin American art. I was the second-place bidder when the first bid was reached. the artist’s record 30 years ago, and tonight, once again, we set a new auction record!” Vogue details.
“This masterpiece will be part of a private collection where there are also two other important works by Remedios Varo, as well as a work by Frida Kahlo that also broke records,” Costantini added.
Leonora Carrington is a central figure of this movement (surrealism) as subtle as it is complex, and she left an imposing artistic legacy, and her work still shines for her ability to merge images full of occultism with the everyday, thus creating a pictorial chapter that challenged logic and that continues to captivate our imagination, Vogue highlights.
It is added that this painting by Carrington had not been on sale for a long time, almost 30 years, and belonged to a private collection in North America.
