There is currently a game that is enjoying great success, which hasn’t been talked about enough in Italy: Animal Well. This is the work with i best ratings of 2024at least up PC and considering only Metacritic, and is the first to be published by YouTuber Dunkey with his Bigmode label. It should be underlined that the excellent reviews are not only coming from the press, but also from the public, who are decidedly enthusiastic about the final result. But let’s go in order.
A success story
Animal Well is a pure pixel art metroidvania in which, in the role of a blob, you explore a large labyrinth full of secrets and objects to collect. Developed by Billy Basso and also available for PS5 and Nintendo Switch (it also has an excellent average rating on these two platforms, 86 and 90 respectively, both however with fewer reviews), it is a strange and fascinating title, full of incredible ideas and intelligent puzzles to solve.
The game currently has an average rating of 91 out Metacritic, the highest for a PC game in 2024 along with Tekken 8 (which isn’t doing too well in terms of conflicts with the public anyway), with a total of twenty reviews. Among these there are also several full scores, such as those given by Eurogamer, which speaks of a very rich and fascinating Metroidvania, and Destructoid, which praises the game for the large amount of things to do and discover. In general, however, the ratings are very positive and do not fall below 80. The opinions of the public also echo the reviews. Animal Well currently seems to be selling really well, so much so that it has entered Steam’s global top 10 several times over the last week. He also has an extremely positive opinion from more than 2,600 reviews received at the time of writing this news, of which 96% essentially stated that they enjoyed the game.
In short, considering that it was developed by a single person with a proprietary engine and that, therefore, the development costs will not have been very high, it is possible without too many worries to consider it a success. Who knows if Bigmode will be able to maintain these levels with the next launches.
