There are few games that are capable of creating their own subgenres. One of the most famous cases in the last two generations is soulslike, a term that comes from the work that has characterized FromSoftware for several years. Given the impact that these titles have had, Hidetaka Miyazaki, director of Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Elden Ringhas spoken about this denomination.
In a recent Zhihu interview, Miyazaki was asked about the term Soulslike, and How does it feel to be responsible for giving life to a new genre of video games?. This is what he said about it:
“We don’t really define the type of game called ‘soul.’ Of course, I play these games a lot myself, as a gamer. I am very happy to be able to play so many games in this genre, there is a lot of commendable content and there is a lot to learn as a creator. It’s a great opportunity.
In fact, when we developed Demon’s Souls, we also followed the trend of the moment and developed something that met users’ expectations; “We and other developers explored and studied each other, and our goal was the same, ‘give players a better gaming experience.'”
Although he does not see his games within this genre, He is more than happy with the titles that have taken his work as a reference point, something that very few can afford to say. On related topics, FromSoftware talks about a possible sequel to Elden Ring. Likewise, a new sales report emerges from Elden Ring.
Author’s Note:
It will be interesting to see what the next game will be that is capable of creating a subgenre of video games. As time goes by, this becomes more and more complicated, but not impossible. It’s just a matter of offering an idea that takes the best of others, but in a unique way.
