The electromagnetic storm reached Latin America during this Friday, May 10 and produced spectacular northern lights in some areas of Chiliaccording to recent information from the Geoscientific Network of this country.
Through their social networks, experts from this organization reported that the luminescent phenomenon will occur at times in the sky from the Aysén region to the south. In this area it will be perceptible to the human eye, but in places far from light pollution it will be better appreciated.
Likewise, from the center to the south of this South American country you can observe the natural phenomenon through professional cameras, in places with little lighting.
Experts from the Chilean Geoscientific Network explained that the northern lights are visible at times due to the flares that arrive from time to time.
“It is also important to mention that there are several hours and days left of this phenomenon, so with a little patience it is possible to see it during the weekend. There is still a lot to see,” they posted on Twitter.
How strong is the electromagnetic storm that caused the northern lights?
Expert meteorologists from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) warn of the imminent arrival of a highly intense electromagnetic storm, generated by a series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). This phenomenon, classified as a Severe Geomagnetic Storm Alert (G4), is scheduled to impact the Earth during the night of Friday, May 10, and could extend into the weekend.
Since last Wednesday, a vast conglomerate of sunspots has triggered multiple solar flares of considerable magnitude, with at least five of them associated with CMEs directed towards our planet. SWPC specialists maintain constant surveillance over NOAA and NASA space assets to detect any signs of the onset of this geomagnetic storm.
CMEs, characterized by plasma explosions and magnetic fields from the solar corona, can generate disturbances in terrestrial and space infrastructure, including communication systems, electrical networks, navigation, radio and satellite operations. For this reason, alerts have been issued to the operators of these systems so that they can take the necessary protection measures.
However, this electromagnetic storm also promises an impressive natural spectacle: the northern lights. These dazzling light displays could be visible in areas not usually reached, extending as far south as Alabama and northern California.
However, this Friday the northern lights, derived from the solar storm, began to appear outside the polar circles, as is the case of Mexico and Chile.
