The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has revealed in its 2024 National Drug Assessment that Sinaloa and Jalisco Nueva Generación cartels operate in all 50 states of the country, triggering the worst drug crisis in US history.
These groups are considered the most powerful and dangerous transnational criminal organizations in Mexico, involved in a wide range of illicit activities that They include trafficking in weapons, drugs, migrants, and sexual activities, as well as money laundering.
The report details that these cartels not only have a significant presence in the United States, especially in border states such as Texas, Arizona, California and New Mexico, but they also have global networks that cover Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania.
The DEA emphasizes that the current crisis is fueled by the flow of fentanyl and methamphetamine produced predominantly by these cartels.
The production of these drugs is carried out in clandestine laboratories in Mexico, with China playing a crucial role in providing the necessary precursor chemicals.
Additionally, there has been a notable shift toward Mexican-made methamphetamine, which is purer and more potent than ever, contributing to a dramatic decrease in clandestine laboratory seizures in the United States.
In 2022, drugs claimed the lives of 107,941 Americans, with fentanyl and other synthetic opioids responsible for nearly 70% of these deaths, while methamphetamine caused approximately 30%.
These figures mark an alarming increase compared to previous years, reflecting the serious public health and safety situation that faces the United States due to the influence of Mexican cartels.
