Gaia Vincea well-known writer and journalist with an impressive international background, recently brought a reality to light unsettling but fascinating. During his speech at the Science Festival in Rome, talked about his latest work, “The nomad century”, which explores how humanity can survive in a world devastated by climate change. Vince won the prestigious award in 2015 Royal Society for scientific books, becoming the first woman to reach this goal.
Gaia Vince: adapt, not just mitigate
The idea behind Gaia Vince’s book came from one growing frustration for how the discussion on climate change is state managed so far: too focused on mitigating effects rather than adapting. Second Gaiamigration is not just one reaction instinctive but one survival strategy which allowed the humans to thrive through the millennia. According to him, we are genetically and culturally predisposed to migrate, and this ability has allowed us to colonize the most remote places on Earth.
During the conferenceGaia Vince illustrated how theincrease in temperatures it could make many of the areas unlivable currently most populated on the planet, pushing billions of people to look for new ones homes in more hospitable areas, such as those in the North of the world. The change climate, in fact, could transform relatively small and remote cities like Nuuk in Greenland into large metropolises.
One of the most interesting of his speech is was there discussion about “Four Horsemen of the Climate Apocalypse“: fire, heat, Drought And floods
These phenomena are already forcing millions of people to move and could become increasingly crucial in future mass movements.
Gaia invites you to rethink borders and the policies migratory, proposing to see these immense movements of populations not as a threat but as an opportunity for economic growth and social innovation. His vision opens a window into a future in which adaptability and cooperation could become the pillars on which a new global civilization can be built.
