The situation for Xbox and Microsoft has become tense on the morning of May 7, 2024, as some major company closures were announced, including Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog Studios and Roundhouse Games, who will presumably lose their jobs. And in light of this news, many comments have come to light, including those from people who previously worked in the company, and it is striking that one of them has precisely come out in defense of the decision.
Through a social media thread, the former CEO of Blizzard, Mike Ybarrahas mentioned that Phil Spencer He must be suffering like everyone knowing that this point has been reached, adding that perhaps the thing comes from managers who go beyond their own power, and who understands the responsibility of having to say goodbye to teams and workers.
Here is everything he said:
I see a lot of shots at Phil over today’s Xbox announcements. I get it. But knowing him as a human, I know this hurts him as much as anyone else. I can’t speak for all of the leadership there, but I do know him and I do know what he is likely going through.
I’m not trying to…

I see a lot of Phil bashing in today’s Xbox ads. I understand. But knowing him as a human, I know this hurts him as much as it hurts anyone else. I can’t speak for all the leaders there, but I know Him and I know what He’s probably going through.
I’m not trying to defend the decisions. I think we all get into difficult and unexpected situations (I certainly have). It’s part of the job, as is responsibility for results. But he is a good human being and cares deeply about the creative process and the developers. That’s my first-hand experience working closely with him for over 8 years and knowing him for over 24.
I 100% understand the anger and confusion, and feel deeply sorry for the teams affected today and over the past few months. I didn’t agree with every decision he made at Xbox, and I think that was pretty clear, but I believe in his product leadership and I know how difficult these decisions can be.
Xbox could have a very bright future. I hope you can figure it out and that all teams have an amazing experience together. It is certainly a difficult time that needs great clarity on what the future plan is and how players around the world can be excited.
On the other hand, there are content creators who are calling for a kind of boycott, where they want to experience no longer paying Game Pass at the same time, a plan that really has no meaning, but that in the end is understood as a supposed protest against the facts.
