The athlete Russ Cook He became the first person to run across the continent of Africa. On April 7, the athlete was welcomed in northern Libya with applause upon completing the “Africa Project”. This consisted of traveling 16,000 kilometers in 352 days, with a route that took him across the continent and passed through 16 different countries.
But Cook did not do it alone, since from the beginning he planned the project with his team and friends: Jamie Carson, Harry Gallimore-Cox, Stan Gaskell, Jarred Karp, Guus Van Veen and James Ward. They were in charge of accompanying him in vehicles to take care of his integrity, inspire him and encourage him when he needed it.
Likewise, thousands of people joined his path, running alongside the athlete for long stretches, showing an act of solidarity for the project’s mission and expressing their admiration for Cook. Thanks to “Project Africa” and its alliance with The Running Charity 1,000,487.47 million euros were raised.
The athlete had to face physical exhaustion and illness due to constant effort and environmental conditions. Furthermore, he came face to face with the social conflicts of Africa. He was robbery victim in which they pointed a firearm directly at him. He even went through active war zones where he could witness missile launches, military groups and the population immersed in the conflict.
Cook recorded his journey through his social networks such as X (Twitter), Instagram and YouTube. Especially his YouTube channel was dedicated to showing the experience from a more personal angle. In his latest video he takes a look at the mental and emotional challenges he faced in the arduous process.
