Nintendo has announced that the successor to the popular Switch console will be revealed by April 2025. The revelation was made at the same time as the company’s year-end financial results were published: Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that the announcement of the console of the next generation will happen “within this fiscal year”, thus setting a deadline of March 31, 2025. This announcement aligns with rumors of a launch scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.
While discussing financial results, Furukawa said, “We will announce the successor to the Nintendo Switch within the current fiscal year. It will have been almost ten years since we announced the console in March 2015.” Furthermore, he added that a Nintendo Direct will be held in June 2024 to discuss the Switch software lineup for the second half of the year, but he specified that there will be no news regarding the new model during that presentation.
Nintendo forecasts point to a slowdown in Switch console sales, with an estimated 13.5 million units sold this year, compared to 15.7 million in the previous fiscal year. It is also expected to see a 39% decrease in net profit and a 19% decline in revenue. However, even though Switch hardware sales are declining, the number of active players on the platform is steadily increasing. In fact, between April 2023 and March 2024, Nintendo recorded 123 million annual players, the highest number since the console’s launch. Nintendo has no intention of abandoning the current generation of the Switch console. In the company forecast, we read that the goal is to “not only have one console for each home, but several for each home, or even one for each person”.
