The surroundings of the Citadel of Laferrière, the largest fortress on the continent, look soulless. For some years now, violence in Haiti has discouraged international tourism from visiting this historic monument, a World Heritage Site. A similar case exists on the beaches of Labadee, previously busy with cruise ships. Amid clashes between gangs in Port-au-Prince, the Royal Caribbean company announced last month a suspension of trips to the bay.
The political crisis that the country is going through has led several nations to put Haiti on lists of destinations not recommended to visit, damaging the economy that depended on these trips. The country’s capital has also been affected by being excluded from sea and air transport routes.
