The death toll from floods and landslides resulting from torrential rains in Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil has risen to 58 dead and 67 missing, while the state capital, Porto Alegre, is witnessing an “unprecedented” disaster.
A previous toll from the Civil Defense reported that 56 people were killed.
The state governor noted that Rio Grande do Sul is witnessing “the worst climate disaster in its history,” with about 300 towns affected.
Several towns have become isolated, as flood waters or landslides have cut off roads, and communications have been disrupted in the state, as rain is expected to continue until at least Sunday.
The authorities gave directions to evacuate some areas of the city of Porto Alegre, the state capital with a population of about 1.4 million people and where several waterways converge.
