Today I will tell you an extraordinary story, that of Akiraa magnificent specimen of the breed Labradors that is making a difference in the world. Get ready to discover how this dog trained for civil protection and rescue interventions is fighting a silent but fundamental battle against marine pollution.
Akira and his ecological mission
Akira is part of the volunteer team of Nita Era Ambiente of Taranto, with operational headquarters in Castellaneta Marina. In addition to being trained in sea rescue and searching for missing people, Akira has proven to have an exceptional talent: the ability to collect plastic abandoned on the beach.
Last week, while doing his daily check-up walk on Castellaneta beach, Akira and his owner came across rubbish of various kinds scattered everywhere. The owner decided to collect it, sort it and pile it up in one place and then return and dispose of it correctly.
But here's the surprise: Akira, instead of just observing, got to work. He moved away from his owner, dived into the sea and brought out a plastic bottle held between his teeth. Then he went back into the water and took out a plastic cover. This coming and going continued until Akira helped clear the beach of abandoned bottles, cans and other waste.
Plastic: an invisible enemy
Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues. The production of disposable plastic items is overwhelming the capacity to manage it. Many of these products, such as plastic bags or food wrappers, have a lifespan of a few minutes or hours, but remain in the environment for hundreds of years.
Plastic has revolutionized medicine, made cars lighter and saved fuel. However, the throwaway culture has led to a dark side: today, single-use plastics constitute the 40% of all those produced each year. This material It damages animal health and, probably, human health too.
Akira teaches us that even a small gesture can make a difference. Each of us can help fight marine pollution. As? By reducing the use of single-use plastic, recycling correctly and participating in beach clean-up initiatives.
And you, dear reader, what will you do to protect our planet? What is your personal commitment against plastic? Leave a comment and share your story! Together we can make a difference.
