“The decision to eliminate the limited number for enrollment in the Faculty of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics represents a threat to the quality of medical training and heralds a serious risk of overcrowding in the medical job market. As the Order of doctors and Anaao, even the Fism is clearly against stopping the limited number”. Thus on Adnkronos Salute the president of the Italian Federation of Medical-Scientific Societies (Fism) Loreto Gesualdo comments on the adoption by the Senate Education Commission of the basic text which eliminates the limited number in the Faculty of Medicine.
The Fism “reaffirms the importance of rational planning based on the real needs of the National Health Service – explains Gesualdo, underlining “the need for an accurate selection of future doctors already during their school career, in order to guarantee quality training and correct distribution on the territory”. Furthermore, “it is necessary to extend the planning not only to the number of doctors, but also to all other healthcare professions, such as nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians and other professional figures – highlights the number one of Fism – essential to support artificial intelligence paths and technological evolution in the health sector”.
Gesualdo suggests “strengthening biomedical high schools” to “adequately prepare students interested in undertaking university courses” in the health field. “However – he warns – it is important to remember that medical schools are currently not able to accommodate such a large number of students, with approximately 70,000 enrollments expected, due to the lack of space and necessary resources”.
The planning of health professions “must be inclusive and aimed at guaranteeing a balance between supply and demand of specialist skills, in order to guarantee correct development of the sector and optimal management of human resources in the health field”. Fism “is committed to promoting a holistic vision of the planning of health professions, which takes into account the new challenges and opportunities offered by digitalisation and artificial intelligence in the health field” she concludes.
