Flaming Fowl Studios, the developer of Gloomheaven and Fable Fortune formed by former Lionhead, published the demo of its new card game, Ironmarked, and at the same time announced the dismissal of half the staff.
The decidedly sensational move clearly shows the current state of thetraditional video game industrywhich is living with thousands of layoffs and cancellations of ongoing projects.
The message from the developers
The message announcement of the demo and the layoffs leaves no doubt as to why such a sensational move: “Today we are launching the demo of Ironmarked, a new game we have been working on recently. Unfortunately, due to the current lack of funding in the industry of video games, we are pausing production and have had to downsize the studio, laying off some amazing people.
While this is a difficult and sad time for everyone involved, we are very proud of what we were creating and want to share it with you all.”
Flaming Fowl Studios has therefore run out of development funds and the demo has the aim of finding others and helping those who developed it, so that they can put it on their CV: “We also hope that by publishing this demo we can help the people who leave us to find new jobs, showcasing their extraordinary work.
We're also hoping that if it gets added to enough wishlists on Steam, we'll be able to find funding for Ironmarked in the future. Until then we'll be working on a smaller game that we can fund completely ourselves.
Thank you for your continued support, we hope you enjoy the demo.”
What to add? Go download the Ironmarked demo on Steam and decide for yourself whether or not it is worth having someone finance the development of the game.
