If the green light had come from the FIA to add the team Andretti to the 10 already present in F1, the FOM, however, had stood in the waydetermined more than ever to preserve the current number of participants in the world championship.
The teams registered in the Formula 1 championship will be one of the key points of contention in the next Concorde Agreement, which will start in 2026.
Mario Andretti speaks
Interviewed by Associated Press, Mario Andretti has explained: “I felt offended. I don't think we deserved all this. This is a great investment for the series and we thought it would be welcomed. The value of the championship with 11 teams is greater than with 10, so tell us what's really wrong“. Andretti then said that he did not like the attitude of Formula 1, which on the one hand questioned General Motors' ability to build an engine and on the other asked the company to find a different team to collaborate with: “This is yet another offensive statement. GM has made it clear several times: 'It's Andretti or nothing.' And F1 behaved like this. There's something I'm honestly missing. But if they want blood, well I'm ready.”
The motoring legend then added: “With F1 we have only had one meeting and it is a problem. We didn't have enough. I ask for a new meeting: let's sit down and talk. We are trying to make it clear that we will do whatever is asked of us. But they don't tell us anything. The rules say that 11 or 12 teams are legal“. Andretti then bitterly concluded: “They never disrespected me as a person, but only from a distance and I don't think we deserved it. Surely the refusal is linked to economic aspectsthere are no doubts”. The American team recently inaugurated a facility in Silversone and has set entry into F1 for 2026.
