Absolute master
In Shanghai Max Verstappen once again showed off his and the RB20's supremacy, mercilessly dominating the Chinese GP weekend. The three-time world champion, who after just five GPs already seems to be heading towards world championship poker, has hit the nail on the head pole position, victory in the Sprint race and victory in the GP on Sunday. Yet another perfect weekend for a champion who can now afford the luxury of literally getting down to business play on the track.
This is precisely what the star from Hasselt did in the final meters of the race, when he already had the victory in his pocket. Coming out of the hairpin at turn 14, with two corners to go, Verstappen in fact staged one controlled tailgating to give a bit of show to the spectators present in the stands and also to his engineers, sitting at the pit wall and ready to celebrate him.
Drift for Lambiase
Confirmation of the intentionality of the final skid came from Verstappen himself, who spoke about it to the Dutch channel Viaplayclaiming to have dedicated his 'svirgolato' to his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiasethe Dutchman's increasingly indispensable right-hand man in all his triumphs.
“What if it was a deliberate skid in the end? Yes – Verstappen confirmed without hesitation – I told Lambiase to look at the onboard. However, F1 cars are not made for drifting. If that had been a rally car then I could have really done a good drift. We had a big lead, so having a little fun is fine”concluded the orange phenomenon.
