Over the past few weeks, Formula 1 has been devising a new scoring system and, to date, it appears this is getting the support it needs to be approved. To date the main teams have made it clear that they will not block it.
As revealed exclusively by Motorsport.com ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, F1 teams will discuss with the FIA and FOM the idea of revising the points system for 2025, offering the possibility of taking points up to 12th place .
This new proposal was designed to prevent the current situation of F1 – which has 5 teams with a performance margin over the others – from having a huge influence in the battle in the middle of the pack. It is no coincidence that the points zone wants to be increased and made to reach 12th place.
The new points distribution will remain unchanged until seventh place, but from eighth position onwards things will change. The change was designed in such a way as not to have an impact on the leading teams from a competitiveness point of view, and also not to lead to an increase in points to avoid increasing the entry fee based on the points they have to pay to the FIA every year .
For this proposal to be approved and implemented starting next season it will have to obtain the support of a simple majority of the teams, which requires the approval of 5 teams and the support of the FIA and FOM.
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur said: “I'm not against it. Coming from Alfa Romeo, I completely understand the frustration you feel when you have a mega weekend, but if there's no retirement in front of you, you finish 11th and the reward is zero. At the moment you can finish 11th or 20th and it's the same thing, so I can understand the frustration about that.”
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner added: “At the moment it seems like there are two groups in Formula 1, and the teams from sixth to 10th are in as tough a fight as those from first to fifth.”
“I think it's one of those things where you have to do the math and look at the analysis and say: what would actually change? So I'm impartial.”
Teams that are engaged in the midfield battle for smaller positions are particularly eager to see the change. RB team principal Laurent Mekies told Motorsport.com that he sees no downside to the new system, which he believes would be an improvement for F1 as a whole.
“Of course I will support it,” he said. “There are no more 'backmarkers'. In F1 there are six manufacturers, plus Red Bull Racing, so there are seven top teams.”
“Even the bottom five teams are now big organizations and it is very difficult to explain to the outside world, to our partners and to our fans, that we are fighting for a P11 which actually concedes zero points.”
“If you consider the level of competitiveness of the top five teams and the level of reliability of the cars, it means that for the majority of the race we are theoretically fighting for zero points, and we don't think that's right.”
“We also think it's more meritocratic because, if you get points up to 12th place, you avoid the effect where, if something completely extraordinary happens and someone gets fifth or fourth place in the rain, it means the others can stay at home for 10 games.”
“We think it's a solution that ticks all the boxes and has virtually no contraindications, so we hope it gets approved.”
Haas team boss Ayao Komatsu added: “What's the negative? We currently have three teams with zero points and I don't think that's good for the sport.”
“If someone were awarded points for P11 and P12, there would be fewer people with zero points. So I think it's clearer for the fans and for the motivation of everyone who works in a team. It's much better to finish in P12 with one point, in P11 with two points – it's a reward.”
