The Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital has introduced a new technique in lung surgery to treat difficult-to-access tumors. This procedure for radio-guided localization of hidden lesions, called 'Roll', is a surgical technique that allows the location and excision of suspicious lung nodules and has been performed for the first time in the Region at the Virgen hospital. of Arrixaca. This intervention has been possible thanks to the collaboration between the services of Thoracic Surgery, Radiodiagnosis (Thorax Section) and Nuclear Medicine.
This type of intervention has already been performed on breast nodules and now the portfolio of Nuclear Medicine services is expanded to lung surgery. It is estimated that in the first year between 20 and 30 interventions of this nature can be carried out.
This technique significantly improves the coordination and quality of the examination, as well as comprehensive patient care.
It consists of a procedure that provides an improvement in care for patients with lung nodules that are difficult to access and smaller than one centimeter, since it allows exact marking and a small dose of radioactivity to be injected into the lesion to be removed.
In this way, the best treatment of small tumors with a very complex location is possible, while operating room and patient admission times are significantly reduced, given that the surgical procedure is less aggressive and assures the surgeon that he has removed the nodule. thus increasing the patient's safety.
