The Colombian Nicolás Echavarría (photo) delivered this Friday the best card of the day (64 strokes, eight under par) to gain 58 positions and get into the top ten of the Corales Punta Cana Championship
The tournament, which is part of the PGA Tour, is played at the Corales Golf Course of the Puntacana Resort Club, in the Dominican Republic and distributes 4 million dollars, of which the champion takes 684,000.
The Antioquian, who on Thursday, in the first round, hit 71 hits, is eighth in the table, with 135 (-9) and is six behind the leader, the American Wesley Bryan.
“I am happy with the way I played. Although I bogeyed the easiest hole on the course, I was able to turn the page,” Echavarría said after Friday's round.
“Definitely today (Friday) it was less windy and that makes things easier. Yesterday (Thursday) I finished with a bogey at 18 and I felt that I should give myself a chance today to do better. Fortunately things went very well,” added the Antioquia native, who came of missing the cut in the three previous tournaments he played.
This Friday, Echavarría recorded eight birdies on his card, a record number in his career on the PGA Tour, which began last year.
“It was important to have rested last week. I was in Colombia last week and although I didn't have practice, it helped me refocus. Sometimes resting like that works. In San Antonio I played very badly, but I wanted not to put too much thought into it. I love playing in a place like this,” said the Antioquian.
Two other Latin Americans, the Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas and the Puerto Rican Rafa Campos, managed to make the cut for the tournament, which will end this Sunday.
Echavarría will play the third round of the tournament starting at 11:20 in the morning, Colombia time.
