The process of assigning MIR places was closed this Friday with one Family Medicine position in the Altiplano unfilled. It is the first time that Health has not been able to allocate all the places for this specialty in the Region of Murcia. In total, 100 had been offered. In all of Spain there are 459 places that have remained vacant in Family Medicine out of a total of 2,492 called. That is, almost two out of every ten positions have been deserted. The Ministry of Health announced an extraordinary call to try to allocate these places.
The balance reflects the difficulties of the National Health System in finding professionals with whom to face the shortage of doctors in Primary Care. It is evident that the increase in places that is being registered in Family Medicine is an insufficient measure. «This is the chronicle of a death foretold; “It is shown that the changes in Primary are being ineffective and unattractive,” says Domingo Sánchez from Murcia, member of young doctors in the Collegiate Medical Organization (OMC). In the Region of Murcia, the regional Executive created 111 new Family Medicine positions last year, but 74 were still unfilled last February. The balance is better for the Region in the case of MIR places: of the 100 offered, 99 have been filled.
But the results in this MIR call are more discreet for regional health than in previous years. None of the resident internal doctors among the hundred best grades in Spain have chosen the Murcian Health Service for their training period. Not even the three graduates from the University of Murcia who were among these most outstanding students.
The preferred one is Dermatology
The first position to be filled in the SMS was Dermatology in La Arrixaca. She was chosen by number 112 of the MIR. The other two places in this specialty in the Region also flew: one was awarded to number 169 of the MIR and the other to 266. The trend has been the same in the rest of Spain. «There is a generational change. Many people prefer Dermatology or Plastic Surgery, specialties without guards or with guards that allow you a better quality of life. It is a different culture than what existed before, a paradigm shift. The new doctors seek to develop professionally, but also to reconcile,” reflects Domingo Sánchez.
The balance of the process of awarding MIR places leaves some striking results. For example, the first positions to be filled in General Surgery have not been those of La Arrixaca, the main regional reference hospital. The new residents have previously preferred up to five places in the Reina Sofía, the Morales Meseguer and the Cartagena Hospital Complex. Something similar has happened in Internal Medicine, another of the basic services in any hospital.
In relation to the rest of Spain, the Neurosurgery or Cardiovascular Surgery places in La Arrixaca have been placed at the bottom, among the last services of these specialties in Spain to allocate their places.
