The grand premiere of 'Vaguito' in Peru left broken hearts and more than one question in the air from viewers. One of them is related to the current whereabouts of the 'Peruvian Hachiko', the dog that inspired this film for its story of unconditional love for a human who died in the sea of Punta Negra.
Many also question whether that faithful lomito is the one who appears in the feature film that generated great expectations among 'doglovers'. In this note, we answer these and more questions.
What is the real story of the 'Peruvian Hachiko' of Punta Negra?
Vaguito's moving story went viral in 2022, after Jolie Mejía shared it. According to her story, she was walking on the beach and saw the dog with her collar waiting on the shore, which led her to think that her owner would appear soon.
However, a local man told him that the fisherman who lived with the animal had died a long time ago and, since then, the dog sat in front of the immense waters to contemplate the horizon.
What happened to the 'Peruvian Hachiko' and how old is it now?
After his case was revealed, the little dog touched the hearts of people in Peru and abroad. Furthermore, he began to be known as the 'Peruvian hachiko' due to the fidelity and unwavering love he showed when waiting for his human, just like the Japanese Akita who waited for his human at a train station until the last of his days.

This emotional real-life story will reach more people through the film directed by Alex Hidalgo, which has the noble purpose of promoting the adoption of dogs. Meanwhile, Vaguito, 13 years old, returns to the sea for his human but he no longer does it alone: Norma Cama, president of the animal association Vaguitos de 4 Patas, who has become his protector.
Who is the dog that appears in 'Vaguito'?
The dog that appears in the Peruvian film is not the one that waits for the return of its human in Punta Negra, contrary to what many believed. In reality, it is another animal whose story is just as emotional, since he was abandoned before being chosen for the project and now not only is he making his debut as an actor, but he has also found a forever family.
The little dog, whom the public will see on screens, had been left on a street in Lince. Later, he was rescued by a shelter, but one day they took him by car and left him in Chorrillos. From there he arrived in Barranco, from where they spread his photo through social networks, according to Trome.

This is how the furry dog came into the life of Wilber Flores, a trainer to whom the director of 'Vaguito', Alex Hidalgo, had given him the mission of finding the ideal four-legged protagonist. Marveled at the tenderloin that was in Barranco, Wilber took it to the casting and the audition was a success. Flores later trained him from scratch and, as she became attached to him, she decided to adopt him.
Additionally, as a curious fact, the dog is also called Vaguito, as it got used to that name during filming.
