“The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the main causes of serious respiratory tract infections and is certainly one of the most serious of all. RSV is a virus that causes very serious pneumonia which, in an immunosuppressed patient, has a greater incidence and severity. In the context of respiratory infections, it is one of those that most easily causes serious complications that lead to both hospitalization in intensive care and death”. This was said by Massimo Andreoni, scientific director of the Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases (Simit) and full professor of Infectious Diseases at the Tor Vergata University of Rome, on the sidelines of an event on the respiratory syncytial virus organized by GSK and which took place in the capital .
“For many years, RSV – adds Andreoni – was presented to the medical profession as a virus that affected children. Unfortunately, this infection also affects adults who pay a significant price in terms of morbidity and mortality”. For this reason “It becomes essential to provide information and have the medical profession take courses so as to learn more about this infection. Today we have vaccines and monoclonal drugs and it becomes essential to make the diagnosis because RSV causes thousands of deaths every year great advantage in prevention against the respiratory syncytial virus. We can imagine the advantage of the influenza vaccination, which manages to prevent thousands of hospitalizations and deaths every year. The vaccination is highly effective against RSV, for this reason – concludes the professor – could reduce public health costs”.
