Shock in sport due to the unexpected death of María Herranz, one of the Spanish promises of trampoline gymnastics. María was 17 years old and she died in the early hours of this Thursday at the University Hospital of Guadalajara, victim of meningitis. The young woman, a resident of Cabanillas del Campo, studied at the 'Elena de la Cruz' Art School in the city of Guadalajara, and practiced trampoline gymnastics at the Ruditramp club, in the town where she lived.
Last autumn he participated in Birmingham (United Kingdom) in the World Trampoline Gymnastics Championships representing the Spanish team. Also last year, in the Spanish Championships, she was fourth in double minitramp with the team on trampoline and fifth in synchronism. «María has left us suddenly due to a terrible meningitis that has taken her in just 24 hours, leaving the town in inconsolable sadness. “She was a charming, sweet, friendly girl loved by everyone, and a great example as an athlete,” said this Thursday the mayor of Cabanillas del Campo, José García Salinas, who declared two days of official mourning in the town.

As a result of this death, the General Directorate of Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Castilla-La Mancha confirmed that the Epidemiology section of Guadalajara has activated the action protocols. Close contacts of the case, according to Epidemiology, have an increased risk of developing the disease compared to the general population, especially between the first 7 and 10 days after the appearance of the case.
