Boston Dynamics' new Atlas robot builds on decades of research and reinforces its commitment to delivering the most capable and useful mobile robots.
With a decade of experience, Boston Dynamics customers already enjoy Spot and Stretch, so they're eager to try the new Atlas.
The Hyundai team is currently building a new generation of automotive manufacturing tools, which will serve as the perfect testing ground for new humanoid robots.
In the coming months and years, Boston Dynamics will be able to demonstrate what the world's most dynamic humanoid robot can really do in the lab, in the factory, and in our lives.
Atlas, the most capable humanoid robot to date
The electric version of the Atlas is more powerful and has a greater range of motion than any of the previous generations.
For example, state-of-the-art hydraulic Atlas was already able to lift and maneuver a wide variety of heavy and irregular objects. The brand continues to develop those existing capabilities and are exploring several new gripper variations to meet various anticipated handling needs in customer environments.
This latest iteration of the humanoid robot builds on a long history of innovation and R&D that has pushed full-body mobility and bimanual manipulation to the limits. From PETMAN testing protective clothing to the recently retired Atlas HD performing parkour, the brand has been advancing the state of the art in humanoid robotics for over a decade.
“Traditionally, we have focused on legged robots because we wanted to build robots that could balance and move dynamically, robots that could navigate unstructured, unknown or adversarial terrain with ease. The humanoid form factor is a useful design for robots working in a world designed for people.
Atlas may resemble the human form, but they are equipping the robot to move as efficiently as possible to complete a task, rather than being limited by the human range of motion.
Atlas will move in ways that exceed human capabilities. Combining decades of practical experience with first principles thinking, they are confident in the ability to deliver a robot capable of performing boring, dirty and dangerous tasks in real applications.
Marketing requires great engineering, but also patience, imagination and collaboration. Boston Dynamics has proven it can deliver the complete package with industry-leading robotics and a complete ecosystem of software, services and support to make robotics useful in the real world.
