Bayer Leverkusen general manager Fernando Carro has revealed that he has “no doubt” that Xabi Alonso will manage Real Madrid one day.
Alonso joined Leverkusen in October 2022 with the club stuck in the Bundesliga relegation zone, but a lively debut season saw them finish in sixth place and qualify for the Europa League.
Now, in the Spaniard's first full season, Leverkusen has already won the Bundesliga title, the first in the club's history, and remains the last undefeated team in Europe, still strong in the Europa League and the DFB Pokal.
Alonso's heroics linked him to jobs at former clubs Liverpool and Bayern Munich, but he opted to stay at Leverkusen for at least another year.
In an interview with the SER Chain Leverkusen CEO Carro insisted that although Alonso could still manage these teams in the future, he is destined to coach Real Madrid.
“I have no doubts. One day Xabi Alonso will be coach of Real Madrid. Without doubts, zero doubts!” Carro said. “What I am not clear about is when, but I have no doubt that he will end up at Real Madrid, since it is also possible that he will coach Liverpool or Bayern.”
Madrid's current coach is Alonso's former boss Carlo Ancelotti, who signed a new contract until the summer of 2026 earlier this season.
Los Blancos have been busy building a squad to challenge for top honors in the coming years, forming a young core with players such as Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga. They are also expected to sign Kylian Mbappé from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, while Bayern left-back Alphonso Davies is also a key target.
Meanwhile, Liverpool and Bayern continue their respective searches for new coaches after learning of Alonso's decision to stay at Leverkusen.
Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim is one of the leading candidates for the Anfield job, while German media have recently talked about Julian Nagelsmann's sensational return to the Allianz Arena.
