The Port Authority has launched, in the Port control center, a program to integrate 112 into the emergency call response service. With this system they seek to strengthen coordination between the personnel of both administrations, avoid duplicating response means and shorten waiting times.
Today, calls alerting about emergencies could be received through 112 and the APC Control Center, which could mean that both sent troops at the same time. Through this program, called ECHO, calls will be answered directly by the port Control Center, which will mean better coordination of external and internal means within the Port's service area, detailed the vice president of the Port Authority, Pedro Pablo Hernandez.
The vice president and counselor of the Interior, Emergencies and Territorial Planning of the Autonomous Community, José Ángel Antelo, also attended the presentation of the new service, who stated that this terminal will allow “the most agile and effective management” of emergencies that occur in port. In addition, it eliminates intermediate communication steps between organizations, by allowing them to share data in real time. Antelo called it an anomaly that this did not happen sooner.
For his part, Hernández reported that they have trained the port police force, made up of more than fifty agents, to be able to implement this system. «Security is vital for the development of port activity, and collaboration between institutions is key. That is why we work hard on training and implementing measures that speed up any emergency that arises to continue being one of the safest ports in the Mediterranean,” highlighted Hernández.
According to port data, in 2023, they attended to 42 emergencies such as fires, work accidents, traffic accidents, incidents on ships, spills, and evacuation of passengers or crew members from ships due to medical emergencies. So far this year, there have only been seven emergencies.
The launch of the new program was also attended by the Councilor for Citizen Security, José Ramón Llorca, the general director of Community Security and Emergency, Ricardo Villalba, the general director of the Port Authority, José María Gómez, the head of the Area of Exploitation, Fernando Muñoz; and the heads of the Operations and Sustainability Division, Francisco Muñoz and Ana Vanessa Torrente.
