The Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital completed the implementation of 43 automated medicine dispensing cabinets, located in hospitalization, emergency, operating room, intensive care, delivery and dialysis floors.
The Minister of Health, Juan José Pedreño, visited these facilities this Monday, where he explained that this new equipment “consists of intelligent drug dispensing cabinets with controlled access, intended to store and dispense medications from a place close to the patient for the best management of medical treatment. In addition, they are integrated with a computer program for assisted electronic prescription.
The automation of the logistics processes of the Pharmacy Service increases patient safety, since errors derived from the storage, distribution, prescription and administration of medicines circuits decrease.
Less time to administer medications
To the extent that this circuit is followed, which begins with the prescription in the corresponding application by physicians, full traceability of the medications and the introduction of alerts is achieved. The time for nursing staff to have the medication to be administered is also reduced, and administrative burdens are eliminated.
Finally, they allow completely personalized dispensing for each patient and a record of consumption, which makes it possible to anticipate medication replacement.
Its structure is modular and adaptable, with an average of 300 references in each device, which include cold space, high security sections, or for large volumes. Its installation required restructuring some architectural spaces.
Financing of 2.5 million euros
This project began in January 2023 with the constitution of a multidisciplinary Working Group for its development and monitoring. It also involved an investment of around 2.5 million euros, financed with European Next Generation funds in the ESF Operational Program of the Region of Murcia 2014-2020. This is another initiative in the digital transformation to improve patient care and management processes at the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital.
