A sudden cardiac arrest, a person in code red and the departure of the rescue team by land and air with the drone 'Prometheus' equipped with a defibrillator. It is the simulation, we are on the third flight, of the Seuam (Sanitary Emergency Urban Air Mobility) experimental project Sis118, the Italian company system 118. The drone flight testing was held in Altomonte (Cosenza). THEThe drone was made available by the Campania aerospace consortium Caltec, the technical partner of the experiment. “Departing side by side from a distance of 12 kilometers from the scene of the event, the drone arrived on the square, directly at the patient, an abysmal 12 minutes earlier than the ambulance (arrival time of the drone: 3 minutes and 18 seconds; ambulance arrival time: 13 minutes and 23 seconds)”, reports Sis118.
“The defibrillator shock was thus delivered, taking into account the time taken by occasional rescuers to take the device from the drone, to connect it to the patient and to use it under the constant simulated telephone guidance of a nurse operator of the Operations Center 118, 9 minutes and 29 seconds before the arrival of the 118 emergency vehicle”, specifies Sis118.
“For every minute that passes from the onset of sudden cardiac arrest, approximately 10% of the chances of survival are lost if the patient is not defibrillated“, he declares Mario Balzanelli, Sis118 national president and Seuam project leader. “The chances of survival become almost zero if the patient is not defibrillated after the first 10 minutes. When instead the defibrillator shock is delivered in the first 4 minutes from the onset of the arrest, as in the final timed data of today's simulation – he underlines – the chances of survival are extremely high, even higher than 70%. It is therefore essential to launch as soon as possible, while on a regulatory basis, innovative 'dynamic' strategies for cardioprotection of the community which in the event of sudden cardiac arrest make the , in the various living and working environments of the country, the defibrillator at the scene of the event”.
“With the results of the third flight test of the Seuam experimental project of Sis118 – he continues Balzanelli – we document today that the use of aerospace by the 118 Operations Centers, where implemented in the near future as a new operational dimension of the Territorial Emergency System, will make it possible through the appropriate strategic use of hyper-fast drones, with margins of probability close to certainty, the drastic reduction in the arrival times of the defibrillator in these highly critical scenarios compared to the use of ordinary emergency means. And therefore, it will, in fact, allow the delivery of the electric shock several minutes earlier than what happens with current response standards.”
“The first tests of the Seuam experimental project are demonstrating unequivocally – underlines Balzanelli – that the use of airborne cardioprotection as a revolutionary strategy to combat the merciless permanent massacre of sudden cardiac arrest is already immediately emerging as an innovative management tool for rescue emergency health care with potentially very high effectiveness, capable of determining a very significant increase in the concrete possibilities of saving several tens of thousands of people per year who, managed in ordinary ways, as has been found differently from decade to decade, unfortunately do not survive (there are at least 60 thousand sudden deaths per year in Italy)”.
