Moments of terror
When George Russell he found himself with the car half overturned in the center of the track, after the accident in Melbourne, the English driver shouted 'Red flag' several times over the radio. In fact, the Mercedes standard bearer feared he might be hit by one of the cars chasing him – fortunately from a distance.
Russell's proposal
As is known to fans, Russell is one of the most active drivers on the safety side, given that he is also president of the GPDA and has returned to the potential consequences of the accident on Thursday in Suzuka: “It was a bad position to be in, in a blind bend at 250km/h, on the line with the car half upside down waiting for disaster to strike. Luckily I had a gap of 10 seconds from those chasing me and 10 or 12 seconds elapsed before the display of the Virtual Safety Car and in that time five, six or seven cars could have arrived.”
Russell therefore put forward a proposal to improve the reactivity of Race Direction after the accident: “I think we should find a way so that if a car is in a dangerous area, some sort of automated VSC is activated, within half a second or so. We're talking about important seconds and lives at risk. I think the time has come to make steps forward in this sense, thanks to the technology we have.”
