gReg Norman is one of the great golfers in history. Twice champion of the British Open (1986 and 1993), once of The Players (1994) and winner of 17 tournaments on the PGA Tour, the 'Shark' spent 331 weeks at the top of the world rankings.
The schism generated by the appearance of the Arab tour has generated several enmities for Norman, among them, that of the organizers of the Masters, who did not invite him last year, despite the fact that he was second in this tournament on three occasions.
In this edition there was no card for Norman either. But the Australian was seen since Wednesday on the Augusta National field. “I'm here because we have 13 players who have won 10 Masters between them. So I'm here to do everything I can to show them all my support,” Nornan told The Washington Post.
Greg Norman appeared at the Masters without an invitation
As if to continue stoking the bonfire, Norman, according to press reports, entered the Masters with a ticket acquired through resale. The version was confirmed by the 'Jaws' own son, Greg Norman Jr., on his X account.
“My dad paid for a ticket on the secondary market to attend the Masters as a skipper. He was denied one outright after going through the proper professional channels. I had to be there anyway to support the LIV players,” Norman Jr. said.
“It was an incredible experience; Hundreds of golf fans walked up to him outside the ropes. All the positive support from him and LIV. Not one person said anything negative to him,” he added.
Seven of the LIV members have won the Masters at least once and that is why they are at Augusta: Phil Mickelson (three times, in 2004, 2006 and 2010), Bubba Watson (twice, in 2012 and 2014), Charl Schwartzel (2011) Sergio García (2017), Patrick Reed (2018), Dustin Johnson (2020) and Rahm, last year.
When the Spaniard won the Masters in 2023, he had not yet accepted the Arabs' offer. Today, the LIV hopes that one of its own will win the title.
“Here's to an epic Masters. Four days where we left all the nonsense behind, sat back and watched a LIV player take the green jacket,” said the son of the 'Shark'.
