Waiting for the Emilia-Romagna GP
Friday 17 May will be the day on which the'Enzo e Dino Ferrari' racetrack in Imola will host Formula 1 for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix free practice, one year after the edition was canceled by the world championship following the terrible flood that hit the region. Throughout its history, the circuit has often been the center of attention for its beauty and some innovations, the latest of which is one month away from the most anticipated event of the year.
Gipave technology
The racetrack, in fact, is the first in the world to take advantage of a green and sustainable asphaltaccomplished with graphene and recycled plastics such as some types of toys, fruit crates and old CD cases. The intervention, 100% Made in Italy, was carried out with an innovative technology developed by the Bergamo company Iterchimica to redo the paving of the access road to the paddocks, the same one solicited by the movement of heavy vehicles and people expected during the events scheduled in Imola, Formula 1 in particular. Technology Gipave, the result of six years of studies and collaboration with other entities such as G.Eco of the A2A Group, the University of Milan-Bicocca and Directa Plus, also guarantees greater resistance and durability, increasing the useful life of the flooring and reducing the energy consumption. Suffice it to say that, over the useful life of the pavement, more than 78,000 kg of bitumen, 1623 million kg of aggregates, over 1,182,125 kWh of energy and 74,000 kg of CO2eq will be saved. All this with the recovery of 3700 kg of recycled and selected hard plastics.
“Motor racing is an essential part of Italian sporting culture and the Imola racetrack does
it fully represents excellence by hosting one of the most prestigious races in the Formula World Championship
1 – he has declared Federica Giannattasio, CEO of Iterchimica – we are therefore particularly proud to contribute to making it greener and more sustainable with our innovative and completely made in Italy technology in an area such as that of the access road to the Paddocks, which is active and operational even on race weekends, such as for example from the 17th to the 19th May when it will host the teams and fans for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix”.
“We decided to asphalt from the Rivazza entrance to the Paddock because it's the most part
stressed by the transit of heavy vehicles – he added Pietro Benvenuti, General Director
of the Imola Autodrome – sustainability is important to us, we are a certified circuit for
sporting and sustainable events. Repaving is a first step for us to experiment with this
technology, with the aim of also being able to intervene on the resurfacing of the track through this
innovative process that can also be an example for other racetracks in the world”.
