The diatribe continues on the importance or otherwise of Xbox Game Pass for developers, with the Citizen Sleeper team who clearly sides in favor of Microsoft's subscription service, going so far as to say that this is the case vital importance for many indie teams.
The statement, reported on Reddit, is taken from the new issue of Edge magazine, which inserted some passages from an interview with Gareth Damian Martin, designer of Citizen Sleeper, in an article.
In fact, the Jump Over the Edge team has launched the sci-fi RPG in question directly into the Game Pass catalog and is preparing to bring you the second chapter as well.
An agreement capable of guaranteeing the future
“Many people say that perhaps they wouldn't play titles of this type but that they tried it because it was offered in Game Pass, and then appreciated it very much”, explained Martin, who reported how the subscription service contributed fundamentally to expand the user base of the game.
“For a studio the size of Jump Over the Age, getting a deal with a subscription service can be vital,” explained the designer, then furthering the matter: “to be honest, I think Game Pass is keeping several indie teams afloat at the moment”.
“It may be a little money for a company like Microsoft, but for us it represents the possibility of being able to develop another video game.” In this sense the agreement with Game Pass is therefore important: it is not so much a question of covering the immediate expenses on the game itself included in the service, but also of giving the possibility of invest in a follow-up project.
Recently, the editor of GamesIndustry.biz reported that he had heard, during GDC 2024, that the “gold rush” of subscription services would now be over, with much less investment expected even from Game Pass and financing agreements with the teams, but for the moment the service is continuing to offer a significant amount of indie games on day one every month, so we are waiting to see future developments.
