The interest of several investors in the unfinished nursing home in Lo Gonzalo has reactivated the project. The City Council is preparing the public tender for the implementation of the accommodation, the works of which were never completed, so the four-story structure with 5,788.74 square meters built has remained in the open concrete skeleton for 15 years. A laboratory will certify the safety of the building before proceeding to hire the concessionaire in charge of completing the works and operating the residence. A study from two years ago estimated the investment necessary to complete the residency at just over 2.6 million euros, although it is foreseeable that the concession, for a long period of time, will be offered for a greater amount due to the increase in the cost of the materials and services.
Instead of the residential rooms that were planned at the beginning of the work, the City Council will give priority to proposals that propose a collaborative residence model or Swedish-style senior cohousing, which promotes active aging through independent apartments but with common services and social interaction. “Many seniors opt for this residence model to feel accompanied but with autonomy,” explains the mayor, Mario Pérez Cervera. The large colony of European residents in Los Alcázares could be a demander of this new collaborative accommodation model. The investor must provide spaces to subsequently locate medical and nursing consultations with socio-health and geriatric personnel. The municipal contracting board will assess whether it has hairdressing services, physiotherapy and multi-purpose rooms for cultural and leisure activities.
In the absence of the elaboration of the administrative conditions, the mayor advances that “the City Council is not interested in charging an operating fee, but rather in having a reserve of stays for temporary emergency situations.” The plot, located in the western area of the urban area less than a kilometer from Los Narejos beach, has 7,607 square meters in a triangular shape, so it will accommodate garden areas and outdoor leisure spaces for residents.
