Singularity 6, the development studio of Paliaconfirmed to IGN.com on dismissal of the 35% of its workforce, a few months after the launch of the game's beta. Rumors of the layoffs had surfaced on Thursday, with former employees speaking about them in their social media posts. Among those verified to have been fired are an environmental artist, an engineer and other developers.
Poor results
In its official note, Singularity 6 talks about a decision made to deliver the highest quality gameplay, ensuring long-term stability. The layoffs would be assessed after Palia's launch on Steam. Naturally, the firm is committed to supporting those made redundant by helping them find a new job.
“This decision was not made lightly,” we can read in the text, “and comes after careful consideration of our development and business management needs to support Palia and its community.”
For the rest, the commitment to the game has been confirmed, which for those unfamiliar with it is a free-to-play “massively multiplayer community sim”, available since last October on PC and since December on Nintendo Switch.
Unfortunately, the initial numbers don't seem to have been great, given that it had a peak of 12,000 players and user reviews on Steam aren't particularly positive.
Singularity 6 is just one of the many studios that have had layoffs in this dramatic first part of the year. Gearbox recently confirmed it had laid off staff following its acquisition by Take-Two, while Sony closed its entire London Studio.
